If you thought the days of independent pharmacies were gone you would be wrong, and we are about to get one right in our own neighborhood. Set to open in late August or early September, the Seward Pharmacy will be conveniently located on Lake Street in the new county building across from the YWCA. The prime location offers 15 minutes of free parking, or longer with a validation, and will offer healthy drinks, over the counter medications and the best cash prices possible for your prescription drugs.

As an adult, I haven’t had the opportunity to use an independent pharmacist, so I asked Elias exactly what would set him apart from the big retail chain stores. His passion was apparent as he explained all the ways he can provide services and cost savings to his customers by helping suggest over the counter medications to try before going to the doctor, by looking at every prescription one is taking and making sure they are all safe and compatible, to being flexible in helping that customer who comes in just as the pharmacy might otherwise be closing. I had no idea the pharmacist could assist with options to actually lessen my visits to either my doctor or urgent care.

Beyond his passion for patient care, I asked him why our neighborhood and why even Minnesota? After graduating from California Northstate University, he followed his heart and landed in Minnesota with his now wife, Mawerdi. Coming to Minnesota to be near his wife’s family, Elias soon found Minneapolis to be the most welcoming environment and fell in love with city. They live in Powderhorn which truly means using Seward Pharmacy will be buying and supporting local.

Elias has been working at a large retail pharmacy but is excited to offer his neighbors his best care and service at his own pharmacy. Elias speaks English, Afaan Oromo, Amharic, and Somali and as Seward Pharmacy expands they have plans to hire a Spanish speaker to further meet the needs of our diverse community. Initial hours will be Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. I encourage you to stop into the Seward Pharmacy, welcome them to our neighborhood and see how Elias may be able to help you with your pharmacy needs.
